At Earth Animal, our independent retailers, or as we like to call them our ‘Indies’ are what make us unique. Clearway Pets is one of our fantastic Indies, based in Salisbury, Wiltshire. We chatted with owner Mike Adamson to learn all about the story behind Clearway Pets, what makes them special and how they are supported by the local community and beyond.
The story behind Clearway Pets
Clearway Pets started out as Clearway Kennels; a successful kennel business. It wasn’t long after that Mike, owner of Clearway Pets decided to then open the shop. Mike told us: “With the success of the kennel, we felt that opening a shop was the next step for Clearway Pets. We spotted a gap in the market in our local area for a sustainable and healthy pet shop, so we just went for it.”
He added: “It’s been a fantastic way for us to stay in touch with our loyal customer base, as we can now offer them a trustworthy kennel and shop, too. We wanted to create an environment where the moment our customers walk in, they can relax knowing that everything we sell is safe. Stocking healthy products like the Earth Animal No-Hide® Chews has already proved to be an absolute hit with our customers; we’ve been selling over 80 a week!”
What makes Clearway Pets unique?
Mike told us: “We only stock a specific selection of products, and we are committed to the idea that we would only sell a product that we would happily give to our own dogs. Not only this, but we’ve worked hard on creating a pleasant shopping experience. Our shop is mostly wooden, with our products presented neatly for customers to enjoy.”
However, Mike goes beyond the physical elements of his shop — he is also dedicated to top-quality customer service at Clearway Pets. He told us: “What really makes us unique is that we have developed a highly friendly environment, where we all feel like one big family. For example, we are more than happy to take the time to discuss anything with our customers and will chat through any of our products, no matter how long it takes.”
The support of the local community

One way we have reinforced this support is through our loyalty scheme. Once a customer hits 250 points, we offer them vouchers, as well as bespoke deals as a thank you for choosing us.”
He went on to tell us: “There are many reasons why pet owners should support their local retailers. For example, because we’re not a big corporate operation, the localised advice we can provide is unmatched. Not only this, but local retailers tend to offer new and different brands for customers to discover.
“We put our heart into what we do, and that’s what sets us apart.”
Mike’s story shows us that the support of the community is crucial to local independent retailers, as well as indicating how Indies are a friendly, educational, and pleasant way of shopping.
