Castlefields in Top 20% of Uk Parks

Castlefields Park in Calne, Wiltshire has been declared a ‘Local Favourite’ as part of a national initiative by the charity Fields in Trust whose mission is to protect recreational green space in the UK.

From 364 parks nominated for UK’s Favourite Parks 2022, and with over 30,000 votes for local green spaces, those parks finishing in the top 20% of the public vote have achieved ‘Local Favourite’ status, reflecting the love shown for them by their local communities. Castlefields Park is one of only 5 parks to have been declared a Local favourite in the South West.

Calne Town Council is very pleased that local residents and others helped to identify, and vote for, one of its key open spaces as a wonderful place to visit. While the park is owned and maintained by Calne Town Council Council, a large part of the work in the park is carried out by volunteers from local organisations including CARP (Castlefields Canal and River Park Association), Friends of the Marden Valley, and River Warriors.

The park boasts part of a canal system, heritage walls, orchard space and dedicated areas for people to picnic and play. Future plans for the park include improvements to the skate park area, restoration of the listed wall running through the park and enhancement of the orchard area starting early next year.

Director of Council Services, Calne Town Council Mr Steve Nash said ‘Castlefields Park is a fantastic open space and we are very proud to have achieved this accolade. It has only been made possible by the joint efforts of Calne Town Council and the volunteer groups that maintain the park. This just shows what can be achieved by working in partnership’.
